Joseph Magnin Stores, USA

By Deborah Sussman
1968/69

Joseph Magnin Stores were high-end department stores located throughout the state of California, USA. Shortly after the sale of the chain to Amfac, Inc. in 1968 the stores updated their image, with new locations designed by Architect Frank Gehry and a new visual identity designed by Deborah Sussman. The result was clean, light, modern spaces combined with bold, colorful typography.

The custom faceted typeface designed by Sussman was first used on hoardings that surrounded the San Jose store prior to its opening in 1968 it was then realized in a number of mediums from paint, glass, wood, plastic and neon.
