FitNation, USA

by Pentagram
2013

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg signed an Executive Order requiring all City agencies to use active design strategies when performing all new construction and major renovation projects to help encourage physical activity and make the built environment promote healthier lifestyles.

FitNation is an exhibition at the Center for Architecture in New York in which these strategies are highlited. The graphics for this exhibition were created by Luke Hayman from Pentagram and team, in collaboration with Abruzzo Bodziak Architects. They illustrate different ways on how to help people stay fit.

On the main gallery ABA designed a wall with panels that organize the exhibition’s content, and Hayman and his team placed typography in Akkurat font on them. If seen from certain perspective, they form words. On the front window you can read ‘FIT’.

The rest of the gallery displays super-size figures in activities such as roller-skating, stretching, taking the stairs… with suggestions and statements on how to make design and architecture more physically engaging.

To promote this exhibition, they also created a series of promotional graphics that include posters for the NYC Subway, a newsprint catalogue that doubles as a workbook for ways to stay active and an animated announcement for an architectural ping-pong tournament.
