RCD Dandenong, Australia
by Büro North
2010
Büro North was commissioned to develop a wayfinding strategy, based around the needs of vehicle traffic, cyclists and pedestrians within Central Dandenong, as part of a 15-20 year program of improvements to revitalise the city.
Dandenong’s greatest asset is also its biggest challenge, it is the most culturally diverse city in Australia. 56% of the population of Dandenong were born overseas, and 51% from countries that do not speak English as their first language.
Büro North’s work included an extensive site audit and stakeholder consultation, in order to define pedestrian and vehicle behaviour and identify points of conflict between various traffic flows at particular times during the day. Recommendations included ‘Shared Space’ principles proven to reduce conflict between vehicle traffic and pedestrians.
