Osaka Aquarium, Japan
by Chermayeff & Geismar
1990
The aquarium in Osaka is one of the largest and most popular in the world. The five-story-high tile murals that grace the large exterior walls act as a focal point for a large development area on the city’s waterfront. The mural is composed of hundreds of thousands of small and colorful tiles. The imagery relates to the aquarium’s overall theme, “The Ring of Fire,” (as shown in the logo) the hot spots of marine life surrounding the Pacific Ocean.
